Getting A Negative Feedback rating eBay

Sooner or later, no matter how hard you try, the fateful day will come when you get a negative or neutral feedback on eBay.

I remember my first negative feedback, quite some time ago, and I was gutted to say the least. After all my hard work of providing the best possible ebay service to my ebay buyers, there it was my first negative ebay feedback.

I actually got a big pain in my stomach, how silly is that? Well not silly really because it takes a long time to build up good feedback on ebay and it can drastically alter an ebay buyers opinion of you as a seller and give a bad impression of the items you are selling.

Over the past 12 months I have had 1 negative feedback and 4 neutral feedbacks.

But I have had 1366 positive feedbacks (1200).

So what happens when someone views my feedback, do they see they postive or negative, most ebayers look for negative feedbacks, I do it myself, your not going to sit and look through 1000s of positive feedbacks, you want a quick account of what a seller is like, are they trustworthy etc etc. Thats why you must always respond to neutral or negative feedback, put across your side of the story.

My 3 neutral feedbacks were from before when two items were late due to the post. And the other neutral feedback was left by an ebay buyer because they didnt know what an ebook was.. This was quick clearly stated in the ebay item description listing, but you will always have people who still dont understand.

The negative feedback was from an ebay buyer who stated that had purchased the item three weeks ago and still not received, they didnt think to email and tell me this though, which I stated in my reply to the feedback.

So what can you do when you get neutral feedbacks? well you can leave a neutral feedback in return if the ebay buyers comments are untrue or misleading. And always respond to the feedback they have left for you, just do a simple seach on your ebay help for "respond to feedback" then you can leave an additional comment on your own feedback under what the ebay buyer has said. So if they leave a neutral feedback saying "item never received" you can leave a reply saying "buyer did not inform me of this". This shows that you were not totally at fault.

You can have negative feedback mutally withdrawn, again a simple search on ebay will show you this option here is what ebay states about this:

The Mutual Feedback Withdrawal Process

If both members agree to mutually withdraw the feedback they have left, they both need to complete the Mutual Feedback Withdrawal form. Both parties will then have their feedback scores adjusted at the same time. Depending on the type of feedback withdrawn, each party's score could increase, decrease or remain the same. eBay will add a note to the feedback comment, saying that the feedback was mutually withdrawn.

After withdrawal, no additional feedback will be allowed for this item.

You should only make requests for mutual feedback withdrawal if both you and the other person have already agreed to have the feedback removed in advance. There is also a limit of 5 requests per 30 days.

So what should you learn from your feedback, well lots of things.

If you keep getting negative feedbacks or neutral feedbacks from an item you are selling on ebay, DONT LIST IT ANYMORE, its just damaging your reputation and feedback rating.

If ebayers / buyers keep stating that they have not received their item, make sure YOU FOLLOW UP ORDERS, you can send the ebay buyer an email, or a quick message through the ebay contact buyer process, just say thanks for paying so promptly, you have been emailed a download link, if you do not receive it please contact me.

If you are receiving neutral or negative feedbacks because ebayers feel mislead by an item description, change it to make it clearer and remove any future confusion.

And if like me you sell ebooks, make sure each listing clearly states the item is an ebook which will be downloaded and read on the buyers pc. An even better option if you have an ebay shop or store is to set up an FAQ page and use a link in your listings to this page such as"if you dont know what an ebook visit my FAQ page".

Another way to avoid bad feedback is to leave feedback once feedback has been left for you, some ebayers feel this is some sort of feedback blackmail, but many ebayers have their feedback automated so you are entitled to do your feedback this way if you like.

One thing I would say, never use feedback as an advertisment for your website (ebay does not allow this) and never put your store name, why? because someone has paid you money for an item and they want good feedback, they deserve it, they dont want you using their feedback for advertising and probably wont buy from you again.

Remember neutral or negative feedbacks are not the end of the world, just always try to be nice to ebayers, even the rude ones, so if ebay ever decides to take any action, they will see that not once have you been rude or at fault.

Your neutral and negative feedbacks will only be displayed for 12 months, so they wont be there forever, so long as you strive to continue to get positive feedback, the neutrals and negatives move down and down the list until one day they are gone.

Famous People always say that any publicity is good publicity, so dont worry too much.

Be nice to buyers, refund their money if its justified, or offer them something for free, if someone is delayed getting their ebook download link, I offer them a free ebook from my website as a way of an apology, so they visit my website (free traffic) and choose a free ebook.
